Stylophyllum

Reuss, 1854:133

Type Species

Stylophyllum polyacanthum Reuss 1854:133; Monotypy Reuss 1854:133

Type Specimen: Neotype; GBA 2809; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Fischerwiese, Zlambach Beds, Northern Calcareous Alps

Holotype has been lost. The neotype was chosen by Roniewicz 1989:119 from among specimens of the Frech collection housed at the GBA

Classification

Diagnosis

Solitary, phaceloid and pseudo-cerioid. Increase intracalicular of variable pattern. Septal spines free or incompletely joined to form rudimentary septal blades; septal spines originated in the wall or on dissepimental upper surface, vertically continuous or discontinuous (lonsdaleoid pattern). Endotheca vesicular or tabuloid. Microstructure of the whole skeleton is homogeneous: wall, septal spines and the upper dissepimental layer are composed of clearly distinguishable bundles of fibres that form stereomal layers continuing from one skeletal element to another.

Description

Morphology, corallum increase, microstructure based on the skeleton preserved in aragonite are described and illustrated in Cuif 1972:220-231, text-fig.1-13. Roniewicz 1989:117-122,pl.36,38 described and illustrated morphological diversity within the genus, described microstructure, and presented stereome made of bundles of fibres (pl.42,fig.4a-c).

Comparisons

Stylophyllum and Stylophyllopsis, genera of similar growth forms, having septa built of septal spines, differ from each other in the structure of septal blades: dissociated into septal spines in the former and compact, made of connected spines in the latter.

Remarks

About 10 species, phaceloid and cerioid growth forms inluding; compare Roniewicz 1989.

Distribution

  • Southern Europe; Late Triassic
  • Central Asia; Late Triassic
  • North America; Late Triassic
Northern Calcareous Alps, Carpathians, Pamirs, Norian and Rhaeatian. North America, Norian.
