Type Species

Fungia elegans Bronn, 1838, p. 900, pl. 36, fig. 7; Original Designation

Type Specimen: Neotype; MNHN ; Not Traced; Unknown

Type Locality: Pliocene: Italy (see Chevalier, 1961)

According to Chevalier (1961:434) the holotype is lost, and thus he designated a neotype, a specimen figured by Michelin (1841, pl. 8, fig. 2). The type species is well described and illustrated by Chevalier (1961).

Diagnosis

Corallum porous but sturdy; costae granular, equal to or thicker than intercostal spaces; marginal shelf narrow; septa lamellar and perforate only near base; synapticulae forming base are large and compound; fulturae well developed; columella solid and compact, often lenticular.

Comparisons

Differs from Rhombopsammia in having porous septal bases, from Letepsammia in having a compact columella and less perforate septa.

Remarks

The genus was partially revised by Cairns (1989). Four species, two of which have a fossil record.
