Sematethmos
Gregory, 1900, p. 168
doubtful, possibly a extreme form of Epistreptophyllum cornutiformis
Type Species
Sematethmos sinuosa Gregory, 1900: 169, pl. 21, fig. 4; Original Designation
Type Specimen: Holotype; GSI N°6972; Not Traced; Unknown
Type Locality: Middle Bathonian, Coral Bed, Jumara Dome, Kachchh, India
The genus has not been revised ever since Gregory recorded from Kachchh. The type material is a holotype by monotypy.
Diagnosis
Corallum colonial, pedunculate, intracalicular increase, septa subcompact with some pores near upper inner margin of septa, columella parietal.
Remarks
It seems that Sematethmos, described by Gregory (1900) on the basis of a single specimen, could be rather close or even an extreme morphotype of the same specific population of Epistreptophyllum cornutiformis. Most probably this is a junior synonym of Epistreptophyllum. The single specimen in Geological Survey of India, Kolkata (N°6972) should be verified for its septal microarchitecture for a final decision. Sematethmos described by Flügel (1966) could be misidentified, especially if the differences in gemmation, corallum shape and pattern of anastomoses of septa is considered according to his figure.
Distribution
- South Asia; Middle Jurassic
