Scyphocoenia

Tomes, 1884, p. 703

Scyphocoenia Tomes, 1884, p. 703 is a junior synonym (available and invalid), see Bathycoenia Tomes, 1883, p. 176.

Type Species

Scyphocoenia staminifera Tomes 1884, p. 703, pl. 32 fig. 5-7; Subsequent Designation

Type Specimen: Lectotype; NHMUK R 18106; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Cornbrash (Bathonian Middle Jurassic) from Le Wast (Boulonnais, France)

The lectotype was figured and described again in Beauvais, 1970 p. 1119 pl. 2 fig. 6

Diagnosis

Massive cerioid corallum with polygonal deep corallites. External surface covered with thin costae more numerous that septa. Intercalicinal increase. Radial elements compact septa free (thick S1 may join in the center) swollen in the inner half, straight or curved. Distal edge steeply inclined near the wall, leaving a wide fossa, S1 creeping on the tabula in the central part. Free inner edges are perfectly smooth, lateral faces smooth, no pali. Microstructure unknown. Hexameral symmetry recognisable, perhaps a bilateral symmetry with shortened dorsoventral S1. Endotheca made of tabulae (observed in S. excelsa), columellar space subcircular or elongate, no synapticulae, probable parathecal wall.

Remarks

Two nominal species were created by Tomes (1884). The special ornamentation of lateral faces of septa depicted by Beauvais 1970 is not confirmed and then the synonymy with Bathycoenia is proposed. The main differences with other species of Bathycoenia are in the costulation and in thickness of septa.

Distribution

  • Western Europe; Middle Jurassic
