Classification

Diagnosis

Colonial, massive, meandroid. Gemmation intracalicinal. Calicinal series forked, generally united by peritheca or exotheca. Ambulacrae present, narrow. Costosepta compact, non-confluent, covered by various types of granules such as spiniform, rounded, and paddle-shaped. Columella lamellar, discontinuous. Endothecal dissepiments abundant. No synapticulae. Wall parathecal to septoparathecal.

Comparisons

having thick, compact costosepta and a well-developed exothecal wall, the material figured from the Aptian of Uzbekistan as Astrogyra edwardsi (Reuss, 1854) in Kuzmicheva (1982) rather corresponds to the genus Stiboriopsis Vaughan, 1899.

Remarks

Based on the presence of a parathecal to septoparathecal wall, a well-developed endotheca made of vesicular to subtabulate dissepiments, and septal flanks that have paddle-shaped granules (see Baron-Szabo, 2014, l. 16, fig. 2), the genus Astrogyra is grouped with family Mussidae.
