Astrocyathus

Haeckel, 1904, pl. 9

Astrocyathus Haeckel, 1904, pl. 9 is a junior synonym (available and invalid), see Deltocyathus Milne Edwards and Haime, 1848, p. 325.

Type Species

Astrocyathus paradoxus Haeckel, 1904, pl. 9, third row, right; Unknown

Type Specimen: Holotype; ; Not Traced; Unknown

Type Locality: Unknown

Haeckel is credited with establishing this genus based on an illustration in his book "Art Forms in Nature" (1904), the image occurring on plate 9, third row, right. He referred to the speceis as Astrocyathus paradoxus (Pourtales), however, the only species Pourtales named as paradoxus was Haplophylia paradoxus in 1868, now known as Gardineria paradoxus. This image is not even remotely similar to that species, but rather the species Deltocyathus calcar Pourtales, 1874. Thus Astrocyathus is considered to be a junior synonym of Deltocyathus and a junior homonym of Astrocyathus Ludwig, 1866.
