Plesiosmilia

Milaschewitsch, 1876, p. 189

Type Species

Plesiosmilia turbinata Milaschewitsch, 1876, p. 189, pl. 49 fig. 3; Subsequent Designation Wells 1936, p. 125

Type Specimen: Syntype; ?; Not Traced; Unknown

Type Locality: Upper Kimmeridgian (Upper Jurassic) from Nattheim (Württemberg; Germany)

The syntype is preserved in Berlin.

Classification

Description

Solitary cylindroconical corallum. Epitheca present and covering costae. Radial elements compact, free, bicuneiform, rather straight, unequal arranged in radial symmetry, clearly exsert. Bilateral symmetry characterised by the lamellar columella. Endotheca abundant.

Remarks

Plesiosmilia is possibly a junior synonym of Axosmilia and Pleurosmilia. The type-specimen was not observed. Nevertheless, as it is probably silicified as other samples of Nattheim, I suspect that the septal ornamention described by Milaschewitsch 1876 was overinterpreted by Alloiteau 1957, p. 364. 11 nominal species were created for the Jurassic, 1 for the Cretaceous (Löser 2000)
