Placocyathus apertus Milne Edwards and Haime, 1848, p. 328, pl. 10, fig. 10; Original Designation Milne Edwards and Haime, 1848, p. 328
Type Specimen: Holotype; MNHN ; Not Traced; Unknown

The holotype could not be found at the MNHN in 2012. However, it was examined by Wells (1937, p. 245-246), who concluded that it is a "young monostomatous specimen of the well-known Caribbean coral Meandrina meandrites (Linn)". Of those species commonly assigned to Placocyathus, Wells (1937) interprets the species variabilis, cristatus, and trinitatis as being Antillocyathus; and barretti, costatus, and alveolus as being Meandrina.
