Classification

Diagnosis

Phaceloid coralla with irregularly oriented corallites of small diameters; increase lateral, producing from one to multiple descendant calices; corallites small, cylindrical; septal apparatus composed of 12 septa, symmetry bilateral underlined by elongated one, or two opposite septa; endotheca composed of rare, tabular elements; wall thick made of centripetally growing fibres organized into modules in the form of fascicles provided with axis.

Comparisons

Pachydendron differs from another phaceloid genus of the same family, Pachysolenia Cuif, in much smaller corallite diameters, and a very simple septal apparatus with bilateral symmetry

Remarks

The genus was monographed by Cuif 1975 based on the material preserved in excellent state in aragonite. New findings are from the Lower Norian of the Central Asia, from the Pamirs (Melnikova 2001:37, pl.6, fig.3,4), and from the Alps, from the Dachsteinplateau (Roniewicz 2010: fig.2H-K).

Distribution

  • Southern Europe; Late Triassic
  • Central Asia; Late Triassic
The genus is know exclusively from the Early Norian, from Southern Europe, and Central and West Asia(Turkey).
