Koilocoenia
Duncan, 1884:115
In the literature, the species of this genus can be found among Isastrea Milne Edwards et Haime and Coelocoenia Volz. Coelocoenia Volz, 1896 was introduced as injustified emendation of the original name, which was rectified in Vaughan and Wells 1943.
Type Species
Phyllocoenia decipiens Laube, 1865:264, pl.6, fig. 1, 1a,b; Subsequent Designation Duncan 1884: 115
Type Specimen: Lectotype; GBA 4396; Verified; Dry Preserved
Type Locality: St.Cassian (= Stuores after Volz, 1896), Dolomites, Southern Alps. Carnian, Late Triassic
Cuif 1973:271 revised the type species; he used the Volz version of spelling of the generic name.

Diagnosis
Colony plocoid or quasi-plocoid/cerioid. Intercorallite wall trabecular, if developed. Intracalicular stereozone, if developed, composed of laterally widened septa and endothecal stereome. Costosepta differentiated into two size orders; built of sub-vertical trabeculae covered with granulations. Inner margin decomposed into free trabeculae. Endotheca tabuloid.
Description
Cuif 1973 described a variability in colony structure of the type species, and microstructure in this taxon.
Comparisons
For its trabecular septa decomposed at the inner margin into free trabeculae, the genus is incomparable with other genera of a plocoid or plocoid/cerioid colony type.
Remarks
Two species are known in the Carnian of the Dolomites
Distribution
- Southern Europe; Late Triassic
