Type Locality: Recent: off Florida, 183-549 m

Type species best described by Cairns (1979). 260 additional paralectotypes at MCZ, 11 at BM, and 1 at YPM. Lectotype designated by Cairns (1979).

Classification

Diagnosis

Corallum solitary, trochoid, attached; epitheca well developed, covering fine hispid ridges; septa normally arranged; columella discrete and spongy; azooxanthellate.

Comparisons

Like Thecopsammia but not septa not arranged in a Pourtalès plan.

Remarks

This genus and family were monographed by Cairns (2001), which included a phylogenetic analysis based on morphology. Three species, only one of them fossil.
