Spongiomorpha

Frech, 1890:74

Type Species

Spongiomorpha acyclica Frech, 1890:77; Original Designation

Type Specimen: Holotype; ; Not Traced; Unknown

Frech 1890 distinguished two subgenera: Spongiomorpha (S.) with S. acyclica as the type species, and Spongiomorpha (Heptastylopsis) with S.(H.) gibbosa as the type.

Classification

Remarks

Microstructural analyses of all species of the family Spongiomorphidae Frech, 1890 made by Gautret,Ezzoubair and Cuif 1992, Ezzoubair and Gautret 1993, and Cuif and Gautret 1993 showed an affinity of this group with Astraeomorphidae Frech, 1890, with the exception of Heptastylopsis ramosa Frech, having trabecular microstructure. Although the analyses of the microstructure of different members of this family enlarged the knowledge of this group, further investigations still are needed.

Distribution

  • Southern Europe; Late Triassic

A rather heterogeneous group of taxa assigned to genus Spongiomorpha is to be revised. Two subgenera were discriminated by Frech 1890:74, nominotypical Spongiomorpha with S. acyclica that should be considered as the type (by subsequent designation), and clearly defined S. (Heptastylopsis) with two species, S(H.) ramosa representing a scleractinian coral.

Microstructural analysis of diverse spongiomorphids and partial comparison with scleractinian skeletons were given in a series of papers by: P. Gautret, F. Ezzoubair and J.P. Cuif 1992; F. Ezzoubair and P. Gautret 1993; J.P. Cuif and P. Gautret 1993.
