Quenstedtiphyllia

Melnikova, 1975:106

Melnikova created a new generic name Quenstedtiphyllia for Hexastraea fritshi Volz; genus Hexastraea Volz,1896 is a junior homonym of Hexastraea Bellardi in Sismonda 1871.

Type Species

Hexastraea fritschi Volz, 1896:91; Monotypy Melnikova, 1975:106

Type Specimen: Holotype; MLU.Vol1896.1; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: St Cassian, Dolomites, Southern Alps. Carnian, Late Triassic

Classification

Diagnosis

Phaceloid amphiastreid with one-zonal (tabular) endotheca. Septal apparatus in quasi-radial symmetry. Increase by pocket-budding.

Description

Decsribed and illustrated in Melnikova 1975 and, under the name of Pachysolenia mardjanaica, in 2001:36,pl.6,fig.1.

Comparisons

Similar to Pachysolenia in phaceloid corallum, radial symmetry and tabular endotheca, but differing from it in the type of budding - pocket-budding in Quenstedtiphyllia while lateral in Pachysolenia, and in the microstructure of septa and wall. In Pachysolenia septa ddo not show show separated centers and the wall is built of modules centered along subhorizontal axes; in Quenstedtiphyllia the centers in septa are discernible, and modules are centered on the wall.

Remarks

The features of the genus were discussed in Roniewicz and Stolarski 2001, and phylogeny of the family Amphiastraeidae outlined. Two species are known.

Distribution

  • Southern Europe; Late Triassic
  • Central Asia; Late Triassic
Dolomites, Southern Alps, Carnian; South Eastern Pamirs, Carnian.
