Procyclolites

Frech, 1890: 64

Type Species

Procyclolites triadicus Frech, 1890:64; Monotypy Frech, 1890: 64

Type Specimen: Syntype; GBA 2785; Verified; Dry Preserved

Type Locality: Fischerwiese, Northern Calcarreous Alps, Zlambach Beds, Rhaetian

Specimens from the Frech collection, illustrated by Frech 1890: Pl. 18: figs 7,11,15. were chosen by Roniewicz 1989 for the syntypes.

Classification

Diagnosis

Solitary with tendency to form incipient thamnasterioid colonies with increase intracalicular with lamellar linkage between centers, and phaceloid coralla. Septa compact, internal edge with projections; lateral faces with continuous, subhorizontal, smooth menianes occuring alternately on two septal sides. Dissepiments vesicular small, abundant. Columella lacking or rudimentary, made of septal projections. Mid-septal zone from wavy to zigzag; lateral septal stereom differentiated into fibre bundles lacking any axial organization.

Description

Morphology and microstructure described in Cuif 1975:85 and additional observations by Roniewicz 1989:85 concern the type species having solitary growth form. Another morphology represent phaceloid coral described by Zankl 1969:text-fig.22, and Melnikova 2001:57,pl.18,fig.1a,b.

Comparisons

The genus is distinguishable for its purely meniane-bearing septa with consequently alternating position of the menianes, and in septal stereom devoid of axial organization of fibres.

Remarks

Two or three species: solitary type species and one or two phaceloid species : Alpine and Pamirian ones

Distribution

  • Southern Europe; Late Triassic
  • Central Asia; Late Triassic
Rhaetian of the Alps and Pamirs.
